ABSTRACT

The description and tegumental ultrastructure of nematode Hedruris lutjanenses sp. n. collected from marine Lane Snapper fish Lutjanus synagris Linnaeus, 1758 collected at Manzala Lake, Damietta, Egypt was studied by light and Scanning Electron Microscopy [SEM]. The new species is mainly characterized by that the buccal capsule is surrounded by four pseudolapia; one small and three larger pseudolapia, each one bears a number of papillae arranged irregularly on its surface and the presence of one pair of precloacal papillae and nine pairs of postcloacal ones in males

ABSTRACT

cytokines production is associated with diabetes mellitus and in its turn is associated with infiltration of the islets of Langerhans with autoreactive lymphocytes and specific destruction of the insulin-producing B cells. Our aim is therefore to investigate the effect potential role of the effect of the cytokine especially [interleukin-lB, interleukin-6, interleukin-8] and C-reactive protein [C.R.P.] on the microvascular complications of diabetes [nephropathy]. A total of 31 diabetic patients with nephropathy aged 45 to 60 years, undergoing dialysis were compared with non-diabetic control subjects [N=20] after matching for age and sex, and were compared also with diabetic subjects without nephropathy [N=124]. Immune parameters were analyzed in serum with rigidly evaluated ELISA. Serum proinflammatory interleukin-6 [IL-6] and interleukin-8 [IL-8] concentrations were higher in nephropathy diabetic patients than in the control subjects [Mean for IL-6 in nephropathy and control subjects 6.9 Pg/ml, 1.2 Pg/ml respectively P

ABSTRACT

Diabetes mellitus is a complex disease with multiple complications which classified to two categories: Acute complications: Hypoglycemia, diabetic ketoacidosis [D.K.A] and hyperglycemic hyperosmolar non ketonic syndrome [H.H.N.K]. Chronic complications: Macrovascular complications, Microvascular complications, diabetic Retinopathy, diabetic Nephropathy and diabetic Neuropathy. We evaluated the relationship of proinflanimatory cytokines [IL-6] with microvascular complications of diabetes mellitus. The first group included [31] diabetic nephropathy patients [dialysis patients]. The second group included [67] diabetic patients with retinopathy. The third group included [57] diabetic patients with neuropathy. The three groups compared with control group included [21] healthy subjects absence of any systemic diseases and infections, matched for sex and age. Our results showed significant increase in both mean plasma glucose and [[p<0.05]. The renal patients group were compared with control group and the correlation between high [LL-6] levels and incidence of nephropathy was significant. The second group showed significant increase in the mean plasma [IL-6] levels [p<0.05]. x test showed significant correlation between the serum [IL-6] levels in the patients and incidence of retinopathy. Whereas in the third group, our study showed no significant differences in levels of [IL-6] compared with control group [p>0.05] and no correlation between the serum [LL-6] and incidence of Neuropathy

ABSTRACT

The relationship between post-BCG complications and the practices of administration and/or use of certain batches of BCG vaccine was investigated. A questionnaire were given to nurses administering BCG vaccination. An abstraction sheet was used to analyse cases with BCG complications among infants [n = 552] and schoolchildren [n = 97]. The rate of complications was 14.7/1000 among infants and 2.5/1000 among schoolchildren in 1997. The complications rate was 19.1/1000 at UNRWA and 8.3/1000 at governmental health services. It was found that a single batch of BCG 2611-11 combined with incorrect administering of the vaccine was responsible for this outbreak of complications. Therefore, the establishment of a surveillance system to monitor adverse events following immunization is needed

ABSTRACT

The development and strengthening of national surveillance systems is a key part of communicable disease control. This review article describes and evaluates the Palestinian surveillance system and discusses the role of the epidemiology departments and other health providers in Gaza Strip in reporting infectious diseases, considers the use of the data collected, and makes recommendations for strengthening infectious diseases surveillance. Underreporting of infectious diseases remains a major problem in communicable diseases surveillance. Recommendations include the unification of the reporting forms between different health providers, increased involvement of health providers in reporting of infectious diseases, and complete separation of surveillance and clinical activities in epidemiology departments

ABSTRACT

The magnitude of the brucellosis problem in the Gaza Strip and the exposure to risk factors among cases were investigated. The incidence of brucellosis in 1996 was 8/100 000. The age-specific incidence rate was approximately equal in all age groups, with a mean age of infection of 20 years. Cases were reported from all districts, with a particularly high incidence in the Mid-zone district and Gaza City, and most cases had onset of illness in spring and summer. The main reported risk factor was consumption of milk and milk products, especially home-made cheese [70.4%], and 22.2% of cases were among animal breeders. The proportion of chronic and relapsing cases was very high [17%]

ABSTRACT

Fifty adult patients with non-articular rheumatism were entered into an open study to show the efficacy and safety of piroxicam, a new non steroidal anti-infammatory drug in the management of these cases. They received Piroxicam in a dose of 20mg in the morning and 20mg in the evening after meal for two days and then 20mg daily in the morning for additional 12 days. Piroxicam significantly reduced pain, tenderness and increase the range of movement in forty two patients [84%] six cases [12%] showed mild improvement and three cases [6%] showed no response. 5 cases [10%] reported side effects, the most common being epigastric pain, but no case stopped Piroxicam therapy. Laboratory parameters done on haematologic, hepatic and renal studied showed no significant deviation from base values
